Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi DonLocated 50km (30 miles) east of Phuket, these two small islands of exquisite beauty have long been popular, either as a day excursion from Phuket or as a base for a few days snorkeling and lazing on the beach. The bigger of the two islands, Phi Phi Don, is shaped like a lopsided butterfly with a thin strand joining the two wings; the left side has a high scrub-covered cliffs, while the right-hand span comprises a jungle-clad spine flanked on either side by palm-fringed beaches. On the central strand is Ao Ton Sai, where the boats from Phuket dock and where there is, lamentably, an ever-expanding jumble of bungalow accommodation and other facilities. Despite such obvious signs of exploitation, much of the island is till stunning.

The smaller Phi Phi Le Island is uninhabited and is more rugged, characterized by spectacular sheer cliffs where the edible birds nest s beloved of Chinese gourmets are harvested. The island need to be toured by boat for a view of its idyllic bays, hidden coves and other sights such as Viking Cave, a splendid grotto with stalactites and ancient wall paintings of sailing ships.

Access to Phi Phi is hugely varied, ranging from converted fishing boats to luxury cruise ships operated by numerous tour companies in Phuket. The main departure point is Maham Bay, while access is also possible from Krabi, the mainland province of which the Phi Phi islands are actually a part.

Probably the most picturesque area in Thailand. Been there a couple of times on a day trip with boat.

For sure recommended daily tour when you are staying at Phuket. Excellent for snorkeling, as well you will be able to see some distant deserted beaches.

Probably some of the most beautiful group of islands in Thailand. If I am not wrong, the movie with Leo Di’Caprio was shot there.
