Bridge Over River Kwai Kanchanaburi

Bridge Over River Kwai KanchanaburiKanchanaburi holidays are unforgettable as one of the most beautiful provinces of Central Thailand, Kanchanaburi attracts great number of visitors every year. For most visitors the main sight of interest is the Bridge over the River Kwai, as the start of the infamous World War II Death Railway to Myanmar, as well as the many associated museums. There is an increasingly thriving backpacker scene taking advantage of the chilled-out riverside vibe for those that need to get away from Bangkok.

Popular sights

* War cemeteries: Kanchanaburi War Cemetery on Saeng Chuto Road contains the remains of 6982 PoWs who died during the construction of the Death Railway. A further 1750 graves are at the Chong-kai Cemetery, on the opposite bank of the river southwest of town.

* JEATH War Museum: On Pak Phraek Road near the entrance to Wat Chumphon, this small museum, a reconstruction of a PoW camp, poignantly documents the horrors endured by the prisoners. Open daily 08:30-16-30.

* Wat Tham Mangkhon Thong: Approximately 4km southwest of town, the Cave Temple of the Golden Dragon, famous for its nuns who meditate floating on their backs in a pool, is worth visiting for its hilltop cave temple reached via a long, steep flight of steps.

* Ban Keo Neolithic Museum: This small museum 35 km west of Kanchanaburi town contains Neolithic remains and utensils first unearthed at the site by Dutch PoW working on the Death Railway. Open Wed-Sun 09:00-16:00

* Erawan National Park: Located in the valley of the Kwai Yai 72 km (45 miles) to the north, this attractive slice of countryside is accessible by forest trail and has series of small waterfalls as its focal point.  Buses for the 90 min journey to the park depart from Kanchanaburi town every 50 min 08:00-16:00.

Sai Yok National Park Kanchanaburi* Sai Yok Noi and Sai Yok Yai Waterfalls: Set in the Kwai Noi valley, these waterfalls are more impressive than those at Erawan. Sai Yok Noi lies just beyond Nam Tok railway station, about 77km northwest of Kanchanaburi town. Sai Yok Yai has the added attractions of Kaeng Lawa Cave and can be reached by boat, a two and a half hours journey upstream from Pak-Saeng Pier.

Kanchanaburi is just a little too stretched out to be comfortably walkable. Small orange and large yellow songthaews cruise up and down Saengchuto, connecting bus station, train station and the bridge, and charge a standard 10 baht. Motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks are also available, with negotiable prices, and some guesthouses offer bicycle rental. A number of places in town (mostly along Maenam Kwai Rd) rent bicycles for 50 baht/day, or motorcycles for 150-200 baht, depending on whether it is an automatic. Remember to ask for a map and directions to popular sights.

Kanchanaburi province is one of the most picturesque areas in Thailand. A tour there is really a good idea for tourists. I have been there with my wife and son and I really enjoy River Kwai and War Museum.
